On the morning of August 2nd 2009 Amit and I rented a car in Miami FLA and decided to drive to Key West - A place I'd always wanted to visit. Being an Aquarius I feel at peace by the serenity of water. Amit was always aware of this feeling. The drive to Key West from Miami is a feast for one's eyes, the overseas highway on the southernmost leg of the US also called the highway that goes to sea, feels as though you are driving through an aquatic paradise!
While driving to Key west you can stop your car at several Keys along the way and take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. As I love water I was insistent on stopping at each and every Key along the way - splashing around and snapping as many pictures as possible. I couldn't comprehend why Amit didn't seem as enthusiastic as I was! Little did I know how stressed he must have been trying to keep track of time. More like a parent trying to distract an excited child from a candy store :-) Nonetheless, Amit was slick enough not to let his emotions be read.
Along with my love for water is my love for FOOD. I get hungry every 2 hours and eat several tiny meals throughout the day. Also I am a bit of a health nut and do not appreciate fast food. When I exclaimed that I'm hungry, Amit pointed Wendy's to me and I returned a look of disgust his way. Poor Amit had to drive around looking for a place where I could find something relatively healthy to snack on. All we could stumble upon were fast food joints and I'd kept insisting that we continue searching. We were circling around for a bit, all while Amit was trying to keep track of the ticking clock and anxiously anticipating his surprise in Key West. After driving around a bit more, guess where we ended up?? That's right none other than Wendy's! :-)
When we finally arrived in Key West we were several hours behind Amit's schedule. I had inadvertently put a few wrinkles into Amit's plans! He had originally figured we would get in a few hours prior to his evening surprise so we could casually stroll around the Island and enjoy Key West's quaint charm and tropical beauty.
Amit then told me he had a small surprise planned for the evening and instructed that I should change and get ready. Now I should tell you Amit plans surprises for me every now and then so no part of me was anticipating what the rest of the day would hold! I asked Amit if his surprise warranted casual or dressy attire, Amit nonchalantly responded "It doesn't matter, wear what you are comfortable in." I then started to paw through my suitcase earnestly thinking of what to wear, pulling various items of clothing out then folding and putting them back - I must have been driving Amit crazy as the clock was continuing to tick!!! I think I finally put him over the edge when I concluded I'd like to shower before I leave as tiny bits of sand had made its way between my toes. Amit exclaimed "okay hurry up." I still didn't understand why he was getting so worked up. Usually Amit takes longer than me to get ready, I was confused as to why he was interested in being so punctual!
When I was ready, Amit had a bottle of red wine in one hand and a bag from Marciano in the other. He casually mentioned that he had got me something from the store and I excitedly started to imagine the pair of shoes I'd been eying at Marciano but never actually purchased. The fact that Amit was carrying a bottle of wine led me to believe we might be going to the beach to sit on the shore and sip some wine. However, we ended up walking for quite some time in the blazing sun and my feet started to hurt. I'm not sure if the long walk was a part of Amit's master plan but it caused me to start to lose interest in where we were going and my questions became minimal. We eventually got to a pier and I was feeling so overheated from the walk that I told Amit I'd go get a bottle of water before I passed out from sunstroke!!! When I reappeared from the store, sipping on my bottle of cold water I saw a captain standing beside Amit. I was puzzled as the captain approached me and said "you must be Seema, come this way." I was lead across a dock and the captain held out his hand to help me into a yacht. I turned around in awe as I looked at Amit and asked "What... What is going on?" I soon realized we were aboard a private yacht with our very own captain! As we set sail I was so captivated by the beauty of the Atlantic with the breeze in my hair and the sun on my shoulders - I started feeling like a princess.
The captain poured us 2 glasses of wine and served us a platter filled with cheese, strawberries and tiger shrimps. He told us to go sit on the deck and enjoy ourselves. When we finally sat together at the front of the yacht we were so secluded from the rest of the world, surrounded by water on every side of us. That was the most peaceful and beautiful setting I'd ever experienced in my entire life. It really felt like a dream. Amit recounted the past year we had spent together and some very special memories we had shared. The sun was just about to set and Amit told me to go stand at the Bow of the boat because he wanted to give me the surprise he had in the Marciano bag. Those few seconds at the tip of the Bow felt like the longest few seconds of my life, I could feel my heart racing and I didn't know why.
Amit told me to turn around and when I did he was on one knee and asked if I will marry him. I said yes!! It was indeed a picture perfect proposal. The captain continued to sail around the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico with the beautiful sunset as the backdrop. When we got back to the dock, Amit had a special dinner planned at a very quaint restaurant called Michaels... The restaurant had champagne ready for us when we arrived and we were congratulated by the entire staff. For dessert they brought us out my favorite dessert "warm molten chocolate cake with ice cream" and there was a firecracker in the middle of it! I had to pinch myself.....was this all happening to me?
Thank you Amit for making my dreams come true :-)
